difficult people
|
Taming the Beast Compiled by Maureen Weiss, The Conference Board Magazine While everyone has a cranky spell, especially before their morning coffee, some people seem unable to get along with anyone. Ever. The temptation may be to deal with offensive people by firing or transferring them, but when the person in question is an experienced senior executive or a star performer that's not the best answer.
"Usually the executives are being forced to see me by bosses who are at the breaking point from dealing with them," says Meredith Gardner, President of THE STRATEGIC EDGE, whose clients include Metropolitan Life and American Express. "The executives are often hostile, but once they realize that their office behavior could cost them their job, they become more open to change." Just being referred to the program is a major step, says Gardner. "Because the performance appraisal system can be so ineffectual and people are reluctant to give personal feedback, an executive often has no idea that his behavior is offending others."
